Thermally modified lumber and beams

Thermoarena thermally modified lumber is sawn timber heated to 180–220 °C in steam without oxygen or chemicals. The process modifies the whole cross-section, lowers moisture to 4–6 % and gives the wood stability and decay resistance. It is used for joinery, carpentry, furniture, saunas, fences, pergolas and industrial applications.

Available sizes

  • Thermo pine – thickness 20, 22, 25, 32, 38, 50 or 63 mm, width 75–150 mm.
  • Thermo spruce – 22–63 mm thick, 100–225 mm wide.
  • Thermo ayous and thermo frake – main sizes 20/26/32/40/52 × 100/155/205 mm.
  • Planed SHP squared timber (thermo pine) – 34×34, 42×42, 42×68, 42×92, 42×117 and 42×140 mm.

Thermo beams and posts can be made to exact size on request, and thermal modification can also be ordered as a service.

Choosing a species

Thermo pine (EN 350 class 1–2) is live-knotty and the all-round choice. Thermo spruce (class 2) is available in wider sections. Thermo ayous is a light African hardwood, knot-free on 3–4 sides – an alternative to Western Red Cedar for saunas, ceilings and fences. Thermo frake is a denser hardwood that also suits decking and is an alternative to thermo ash. The raw material is PEFC certified. Thermowood is lighter than untreated wood but slightly more brittle, so pre-drill and use stainless fixings.
